The Do-Over Do-Over
Happy belated 20th to LA's finest.
LA institution The Do-Over celebrated their 20th anniversary this past Sunday.
Posting after the fact doesn’t reflect any lack of enthusiasm for one of my favorite events as both a DJ and attendee. Plus, they already sold that mf out!
The party started as a sangria-stained soirée in the backyard of Crane’s Hollywood Tavern and grew organically into a cross-country (and ultimately international) force. The last one I played at South Street Seaport featured Biz Markie rocking 7” doubles on custom miniaturized Technics, Mark The 45 King playing Serato off a flat-screen TV (so he could see the waveforms properly) and Tony Touch setting off line dances.
So: legendary for good reason!
Yet even at its biggest, the Do-Over remained a Cheers for DJs — a place where everybody knows your name, and you could see all your friends at once.
Here are two sets from the early days at Cranes, which somehow still exist in the hazy glow of Blackberry JPEGs, Glenjamn footage and mp3s I’m glad I remembered to download when I had the chance.
RIP Biz, Mark and Blu Jemz.

Armand Hammer & The Alchemist, “Laraaji” — the new LP from these guys is as good as expected — dense, tense, “now” — and I love how this vid (dir. Joseph Mault) captures their whole vibe with pitch-perfect surveillance state flair.
Joey Fatts f. Vince Staples, “Corporate Thuggin” (The Vince Staples Show S2 out nowww)
Karen Dío, “Cut Your Hair” (pop punk back?)
Meet Me @ The Altar, “Karma” (I guess so!)
The Gear Of Gilmore Girls — shout out Hep Alien…
Michelin Man rims (unrelated spinners: drift racing wheelchair)
Steve Martin Metrograph interview with Deceptive Practices (“Hollywood’s top magical consultancy firm”)
