Snow Day
"This whole world's wild at heart and weird on top."
First off: insanely hard fit.
What you know about belted children’s snowsuits of the 1980s?!?
Was not able to drop down and get my angel on in Warinanco Park for the birthday this year — aka 2nd (!!!) anniversary of this Substack — though festivities did get cancelled for weather.
Don’t worry, I felt very loved on Instagram Stories all day and cracked open the weirdly hard to find Wild At Heart Blu-Ray that evening.
Had never seen David Lynch’s notoriously divisive road movie / fever dream before, though the influence looms large. Every frame’s been on a mood board; True Romance, Natural Born Killers and Lana Del Rey couldn’t exist without it.
His Oz-inspired parable is beautiful, disturbing, campy and sweet, often all at once — an inspiring reminder that a movie can be anything.
But you have the same internet, I don’t need to recap more important things that happened elsewhere in the snow this weekend.
Caring about old movies / birthdays / whatever during “unprecedented times” can feel frivolous. There are many infographic activists who’d agree!
I don’t have answers — I like the suggestions — but I do think it’s worth chipping away at whatever “your thing” is throughout. We can walk and chew gum at the same time; destructive forces will always be hard at work, but they shouldn’t be allowed to steal the joy of creation too.
After Lynch passed, Nic Cage shared some insight on working on Wild At Heart, a process that started at a dinner he had with the director and Laura Dern while the Pan-Pacific Auditorium burned blocks away.
This quote sticks out:
Nori x Kori, “i_aint_fly (G6)” — gold grill UK rap mash of Far East Movement and “Rhythm N Gash,” silly and perfect. NoahSoCold collab when?!?
Blaqstarr, “Saturday Night” (weird af love it)
Still Feel Gone, Presley + Old Songs (excellent Jersey emo)
Weval, “Melchior’s Dance” (dir. Merijn Scholte Albers & Tobias Smeets)
XXRETRO_FIREXX on Instagram — new fav social media account is this one dedicated to archiving Axl-approved hesher high-tops of yore (while griping about their reissues). “Make Sneakers Metal Again!”
McDonald’s Changeables are back (shout out Kurtis The Divine)
Mouse: P.I. For Hire (dig the b&w Silly Symphonies vibe)
Playlists updated!
