Listen To Ghostface
Scream soundtracks back!
Snow or not, I’ll be front row for Scream 7 this Friday, continuing a streak of watching every film in the series with my final girls on opening weekend for three decades and counting (gulp).
“Will it be any good?”
The original is a generational classic and I’m quite fond of (most of) the others...
JK I love every one of these dumbass movies!
My personal power ranking goes 1, 4, 3, 2, then waaaaaaay down for 5 and 6.
Those requels haven’t exactly inspired confidence in a new one. I’m curious if any Melissa Barrera era plot points will endure, but also way too grandfathered into the franchise to care either way.
As with any family member, you just gotta show up for ‘em…
I do appreciate that they’re putting some effort into the songs again!
You’re not going to find music of the Scream films next to other Case Logic remnants from the ‘90s soundtrack boom. That said, each one remains a uniquely strange and period-specific time capsule of diagetic bangers, crass label cash-ins and genuinely inspired syncs.
First one dropped via TVT, progenitors of the brat green 12” sleeve. Sadly, no Lil Jon or NIN on the tracklist, but they did bless us with some thematically appropriate Republica and an all-timer alt-rock footnote.
RIP Gail Weathers’ news van.
Capitol stepped up for the Scream 2 comp, a smorgasbord of major label detritus circa 1997: DMB and Collective Soul loosies, a surprisingly enjoyable Sugar Ray track, Master P saying the name of the movie (unnngh).
There’s also D’Angelo covering Prince for seven minutes and Jon Spencer blues exploding Dr. John with an assist from Dan The Automator.
I’m leaving out DJ SPOOKY!
Creed’s Wind-Up label handled Scream 3, though Scott Stapp and a full Ozzfest roster couldn’t shape the results into anything you’d remember after Y2K (no shade to David Arquette side quests or lenticular CDs).
Songs got slightly more tasteful but no less disposable in Scream 4, though I’ll always keep a room in my heart for The Sounds.
Tracklists for 5 and 6 were pure Spotify shuffle, perfect for the mid-ness of the films themselves; our whole theatre legit guffawed when Khaled’s ANOTHER ONE! hit the speakers.
Yet even after surviving all that, a surprise Don Tolliver single from this latest entry somehow has me…
Psyched?!?
Shout out the Cactus Jack art department (you do excellent work in the genre of weathered brown clothing). This was made with love!
Sleeve is lowkey perfect, right down to the faux ringwear and Paramount logo on the hype sticker. Need a physical copy ASAP to shelve next to my Ramones’ “Pet Sematary” vinyl (note: wrote all this before Supreme dropped their officially licensed Gore-Tex jacket, hoop short, beanie, Jacob & Co diamond necklace and bandana mask lol).
Have I been… ghost-lit?
It’s quite possible that “Creepin” is my Lucy football, a jump scare fake-out for a rote slasher sequel — ANOTHER ONE! — but right now I’m content to appreciate a promo contribution with some semblance of a pulse.
DANPAPA GTA, “IKEJA” — Suze’s Substack is one of my absolute favs for music recommendations, a monthly(ish) collection of joyously funky joints like this from beyond the feed.
Spoek Mathambo, “I Don’t See It That Way” (quirked up Strokes cover)
Sideshow, “ALENA(ኣለና)PARADISE LOST” (dir. Nicholas Stafford Briggs)
Tony Tuff, Wha We A Go Do (1984 reissue, digital irie vibes)
Flying Lotus Lot Radio Set (v groovy)
Phish Phashion on IG — rock vets let loose in rich guy stores will never not amuse me. Metallica in their Armani bag, William Patrick Corgan the Louis Vuitton don… put it in my veins. Trey rocking Gallery Dept is an obvious delight but I must also bigup Gunner Store’s coverage of Axl’s Versace hauls.
Stüssy Coated Field Coat (more like GOATed field coat amirite)
Shaka King @ Maysles Center Wed 2/25 (rare shorts + Timm talk)
Director Nastasya Popov on why it’s important to keep making things
Baby Greedo is Star Wars canon (what does 03 Greedo think)
Making Sam Rockwell Talk About (Almost) Every Film He’s Ever Done
Steven Soderbergh’s Nitehawk programming / cocktail takeover (fond of a Singani mule myself)
Playlists updated!
