Hachiko Bangbang!
A joyful noise.
First off: back outside next Saturday (12/20) to DJ the Friends From New York Holiday Dance Party at Champagne Problems (207 Bowery, tix here) with the homies Stretch Armstrong, Roxy Cottontail and Darling Chuck.
Because “fun” is important.
There’s a lot in the world that feels designed to crush it out of you.
If you can grab some anywhere in your day, do it!
I feel fortunate to be an easy laugh and a silly silly fun boy.
One of my favorite Friday activities is to get as [redacted] as the Marty Supreme blimp and watch every music video I’ve added to queue throughout the week. I have broad tastes and enjoy digging for surprises; the algorithm has continued to reward me with more and more off-the-beaten-path suggestions as a result, including this pure and enthusiastic jam from CDMX punkers siempre no.
I know nothing about them, but stumbling upon this tune made me so happy that even a pre-roll clip of Kristi Noem’s rictus grin could not dull it’s joy.
I am thrilled to pass their irrepressible, Mentos-in-a-Coke-bottle energy on to you.
Plug in and screech!
Lil Baby, Playboi Carti & Skooly “Let’s Do It” — egregiously out of tune 808s are an enormous vibe. The aftershocks of Metro Boomin’s double-disc TBT A Futuristic Summa continue with this one, alongside TM88s excellent (and Fabo-filled) new F.I.L.A. 25 (Forever I Love Atlanta). They also give me another opportunity to talk about how much I still love Yung LA’s mascot / logo.
9lives ft. 5EB, “MONEY RAIN” (fried Radiohead samples, yes)
TOMORA, “RING THE ALARM” (new Chemical Bro collab)
ira4ma, “Magazine” (another lovely algo find)
Fine Young Cannibals, “I’m Not Satisfied (Prince Paul 12” Mix)” (newly remastered on the FYC40 comp. On that note, did not know Puffy is dancing in “I’m Not The Man I Used To Be” video until watching the Netflix doc!)
Leo & PTA Play With DVDs — never shouted out “Townies” as song of the year and somehow didn’t post a damn thing about One Battle After Another either. Loved it! Amused by the Fortnite tie in! Always down for a few small beers! Don’t have any other OBAA dots to connect but in the spirit of year-end link clearance, here’s Paul Grimstad on playing Howard “Billy Goat” Sommerville, NY Mag riffing on assassination culture, a Spielberg-moderated Director's Guild Q&A and this lil nugget of gaffer insight to tie it all up.
The Untold Story Of John Cena’s 2005 Rap Album (the time is now)
Jarvis Cocker on record collecting (buy the whole mag it’s great)
Playlists updated…
