This incredible, deeply Catchdini-coded photo is from Jarvis Cocker’s IG — which has no connection to anything beyond the fact that you should listen to more Pulp!
Haven’t dug into the new album yet but have returned to This Is Hardcore (deluxe “Like A Friend” version OFC) with a vengeance. Anyway…
Been editing my short (dropped some score easter eggs for the Herbs) and aggressively enjoying the summer. Hope you are too.
Here’s links!
Randy & Young Miko “Jetski” — speaking of aggressively enjoying the summer, this is as wholesome as a video with so many butts could possibly be. More recent MTV YouTube Friday night highlights:
Lewis OfMan, “Seoul Disco Nights” (Lewis thoughts from last year here)
Scattrbrain, “Switch (Live From Big Trouble)”
Eternity Chaos & Ghost Mountain, “DIE4U”
Night Of The Juggler 4K Trailer — psyched for more folks to catch this pulpy, late ‘70s NYC treat (and clear Die Hard WIth A Vengeance inspo) featuring a wonderfully odd Cliff Gorman and James Brolin at his babeliest.
Jesse & The Rippers Gear Breakdown — if u care about John Stamos’ onscreen BC Rich collection…
Foxy Brown ft. Total, “I Can’t” — big Fourth Of July All-Mix Weekend highlight was hearing this forgotten (by me) Wham flip (by Ty Fiffe) get slammed into the Jadakiss mix of “Heard It All Before.” Live Laugh Lugz approved!
Alex Ross Perry Pavements + Videoheaven interviews — haven’t seen either film yet but I enjoy ARP’s passionately skewed outlook. Filmmaker focuses on the latter (a Blockbuster Video Los Angeles Plays Itself) while Mubi ties it in to his Pavement anti-doc. There’s bars throughout:
I also know that you get to buy a home if you direct dogshit TV. But because that is also not available to me, that means six-figure paychecks and home ownership might not be available to me in the same way that it is to people that made promising indie films and now make disposable, streaming content. And I both disregard that entirely as an artistic enterprise and am seethingly jealous of those opportunities. So I can dismiss it because I would say yes to it in a second. But no one’s ever asked… the thing that I think a lot of people lose track of in the middle of their professional lives is that you do have to care about something, or else you’re just a cog in the machine. The lessons of a Malkmus are: Never be that. That’s not gonna get you anywhere. That’s the end of your reputation as a freethinker. And that’s a hard thing to keep track of as you get older and have life responsibilities. It's kind of an ongoing battle to preserve that.
Murder Dog Returns — iconic early ‘00s rap mag offering equal time to E-40 and ICP is back online. Need the cover archive!
Yung Lean, 256GB — someone thought it would be a good idea to take several years of Jonatan Leandoer’s iPhone photos and turn them into a Bible-inspired hardcover. Not saying I disagree, but kudos to the internet for consistently finding new ways to break brains.
Standards Manual, Brand Identification Manuals for Coca-Cola — more bookshelf insanity in the form of a hyper-detailed, Don Draper on the mountaintop-era logo guide repro. This great review of SM’s 1982 DC Comics Style Guide sums up the series’ appeal: “fascinating stuff, for true sickos.”
Dan Deacon National Anthem — a bugged out (and oddly soulful) version for our bugged out (and oddly something else) times.
