Still healing brain post-shoot and mid-edit but *BERNIE MEME VOICE* I am once again sharing a roundup of things I enjoy from the internet with you, beloved friends and complete strangers.
This one’s just music…
Jermaine Dupri's YouTube channel — JD has been quietly dropping studio snippets with everyone from Kilo Ali (!!!) to Travis Porter while they craft the soundtrack to an upcoming Magic City documentary (ATL strip club not Jess' label). The low-key, tossed-off quality is genuinely endearing, didn’t know how much I was missing that Clones DVD / Fade To Black Timbo texture.
Timbaland & BLK ODYSSY, “ON SITE” — speaking of Mr. Mosely, he’s back in cartoon melody mode, mixing the wonky Hanna-Barbera energy of “Here We Come” with the bump of his mid ‘00s Peloton playlist classics.
AOL dial-up on Guitar Hero — have had The Oral History Of Millenial Tech in an open phone tab waiting for my full, uninterrupted 56 Kbps attention...
DRAM x Ellis Quinn, LEORPIO — smoothed out new new from Hampton, VA’s finest, ping-ponging between player and zooted. Run it into the new Harry Fraud-produced Valee album (DRAM’s on that as well) to continue lowering ur resting heart rate.
Ad-Rock for IFC — updated ident for IFC Films (now “Independent Film Company”) with upright bass stinger by the crankiest Beastie Boy. While I appreciate Adam’s default “I don’t do much” mode, he is an underrated producer who I would love to hear more from. BS 2000 4 eva!
Lunchbox, L.B. Cooper — summer jams courtesy Sheck Wes’ erstwhile teen collaborator. Deep fried 2K25 autotune is… an acquired taste, but this has a certain melodic (dare I say hypnotic) something something. Can’t get through a full Yeat album but have kept this in rotation, do with that what you will.
Skillibeng x The Sylvers — waviest “Misdemeanor” flip in some time. “Bumbaaaaaclooooooooot!”
NCY Milky Band, Ok No Club — u know when Braulio’s on sleeve detail it’s about to get freaky. Also: twichy, jazzy, and occasionally funky, with some surprising chillout moments for good measure.
Laraaji x Herb Sundays — SV4’s weekly Herb writeups are always a discursive delight, but this one is a full mindgarden (Heart! Maybelle Carter! Fine linens!) worthy of its subject. Need to know what Laraaji was cooking in The Space Pit…
Sayuri & Sopholov, Fuentes Prod, “Secunena” — was already hype to do backflips in the apartment a few seconds in, then that lil “Insane In The Brain” siren (whistle? squeal? horse whinny?) hits and I am forced to injure myself.
Jules Shear, “All Through The Night” — OG of a Cyndi Lauper fav, with Todd Rundgren making it sound like a Muppet pub crawl. More TR for the chat: he produced Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell simply “to make fun of Bruce Springsteen.”
Jim Jones Riding A Rolling Suitcase In An Airplane Hangar — not even gonna pause, Jomo looks like he’s having a fantastic time. Big days for wheeled carry ons!
Miso Extra, Earcandy — high-grade mallrat music.
Slow Mass, “Hell Is Earth” — don’t know anything about this band (it’s giving Hum), I’m just awesome at YouTube and its algo rewards me often.
spill tab, ANGIE — been a fan since the weirdo pop rock of “Creme Brulee.” She’s lightly disavowed that era but has continued to evolve her signature mix of Sour Goldbear songcraft and cut ‘n paste production glitchery.
Sonic Youth Reverb Shop — if u wanna cop Lee Ranaldo’s (not so) gently used Mu-Tron Bi-Phase, now is the time…
Born Ruffians, “Athena” — always been aware of BR in a “FADER Fort Powered By Verizon Wireless” kinda way but never really checked for ‘em. My loss! This one is great (“Weird Science type beat” — my cousin) and I look fwd to the full LP next month.
Bachata X-Men Theme — why yes complex dot com, this X-Men bachata remix (it’s a cover, language matters) is an absolute vibe. See also: Prince Royce covering Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac and Backstreet Boys on his new album.
Red Baraat & Delicate Steve, “Bhangale (Nick Catchdubs Remix)” — on most days, checking the Spotify For Artists app just makes me want to set up a blind date between the two people currently listening. Sometimes, you find out an old remix has recieved new life. Universe be universe-ing!
