Etceterama VI
Some early Q1 loosies.
We made it to February!
Let’s clear out some browser history as a treat.
Mello Buckzz ft Monaleo “Move Pt. 2” — now that Jersey Club is on the radio as much as any Splice pack, are we finally gonna get a juke crossover moment? Some of us were ready in 2007!
Book Of Love, S/T — thank u Companion for the reminder, this goes.
Cable Knit Knicks Jersey — from the folks who brought you Yankee fitted mortarboards. For even more bizarro uni mashups, Allen Iverson made Reebok Question golf cleats.
Teenage Fanclub, “Bandwagonesque” — Jason Reitman’s Young Adult needledrops warmed me up to this 1991 LP’s wistful, jangly (Glaswegian!) charms. They also made the best rap rock collaboration of all time.
Gene Simmons x Rob Lowe — The Demon sued the Fanclub for that sleeve art btw! His “money bag with dollar sign” copyright is one of many anecdotes sprinkled throughout this pod (not unrelated, if u have yet to watch Gene torment Uncle Jesse in 1986’s Never Too Young To Die, please do so immediately).
The Sims 25th Anniversary — loved this insight on the beloved game (and its subversive history) from creator Will Wright: “You buy all these things, fridges and TVs. And all these things promise to make you happy. But at some point they all start breaking down. They become hidden time bombs...”
Mark Ronson ROAD Podcast — obvious must-listen. Mark, finish your book!
LaRussell, MALACHI, Hit-Boy, “MASS APPEAL” — got fully LaRussell pilled last year, so the matrix now knows to keep me abreast of slapper after slapper. “Hammer Time,” tho! New Ezale and Nef The Pharoah tapes are solid too…. children of hyphy, do not stop burning rubber around my heart.
Fox 5 NY Archives — was at a Jersey City sports bar recently (lol) when the lone flatscreen not playing the Chiefs game had Andy Warhol (!!!) on mute asking “it’s 10pm… do you know where your children are?” Apparently Fox 5 made a whole supercut of these PSA deep cuts as part of a general push to digitize their tri-state TV news history. As Killa Trav says: MORE! MORE! MORE!
Chromeo x We Are Rewind Cassette Player — speaking of Kelce, I hope America’s most famous Funk Lord has preordered my dudes’ portable tape deck (this was written before the Super Bowl so i'm happy for u tho or sorry that happened).
Warner Brothers Studio Store Unofficial Flickr — thank you for ur service.
Liv Morgan x Pod Meets World— Morristown’s finest powerslams Topanga and company on the signature podcast of the TGIF-verse.
Various Artists, Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 Vol 2 — been grooving on Time Capsule’s Substack liner notes even more than their fantastic compilations. Any label repping Reggae Ryuichi is good in my book.
Josh Homme x Peavey — after the iconic Queens Of The Stone Age tone was traced back to a semi-obscure practice amp, the folks at Peavey reissued it in speaker (and pedal) form. “No One Knows” still insanely hard, btw.
Reddglk, “Animal Crossing” — when the MV looks melted I am legally obligated to watch! If u wanna explore this vibe on your own, Tiny Tapes offers “Geek FX: The Ultimate Brainrot Effect Pack for Video Editors.”
Ichiro in Wu-Wear — the garment renaissance.
Billy Corgan x Bill Burr x Howie Mandel — backstory is insane but I will listen to any and all Smashing Pumpkasts (or more accurately, add ‘em to a playlist next to the four other ones I haven’t gotten to yet). Billy just dropped a new pod of his own and the first guest is… Gene Simmons lol.
Official Thirstin Howl The 3rd “Polo Rican” Action Figure — Ralph got the medal but this takes the crown. Never salute Old Navy!
Playlists updated…
