In a time of much Mayoral to-do shaking up the Table Of Success, one of the few metro area stories I can describe as legit positive is the rebirth of East Village Radio, the internet station / community hub connected to Lil Frankies, home of the rigatoni polpettini ragu of my dreams and yours…
I spent many, many Fridays in their glass box on First Ave in the mid ‘00s, holding down music and mic duties for The Let Out, the FADER Magazine show that aired right before Mark Ronson’s Authentic Shit. Our 6-10pm two-step (immortalized in mixtape form) meant tons of interesting folks were popping in and out of the booth every week.
Gotta shout out that trusty Serato SL-1 box, endless snaps from Blu Jemz (RIP), teenage Lil B and The Pack showing up and immediately checking MySpace messages on the PC tower, San Quinn freestyling (I played a lot of hyphy), Amy Winehouse winking at me before hopping down the street to get tatted, Lilly Allen’s MacBook covered in YoYo stickers…
I am leaving out too many!
But as always, I appreciate having been “in the moment” instead of fretting about documentation. Will dive into my archives at some point to better recall the playlists and/or refresh the memories, but dropping “Still Tippin” for the first time to grime OGs Jammer, D Double E and Ears is forever going to be massive.
I’ve only just begun to explore the new EVR shows (archived on Mixcloud for your listening enjoyment) and it seems like another fun mix of styles. I loooooove that the homies Matthew Law and Donwill are keeping the spirit alive with their slots, and that first-generation crew like Ballers Eve have returned alongside ‘em...
“Looking For The Perfect Woman” Flyer Guy — while we’re in an EV state of mind, here’s a chat with the dude taping up all those xeroxes. “Perino estimates he's gotten over 5 million replies and claims to have kept a record of them. He gets calls, texts, and emails and has a separate phone for each.”
Caribou, Honey — imagine Dan Snaith getting to have a (well deserved) Four Tet at MSG moment off this new record?!? All twelve songs are great but gotta shout out “Volume” as one of my favorite tunes of the year.
Master P’s Bubble Eye Hummer — “Listed for sale earlier this year for $40k. It came equipped with a Sega Dreamcast game system and custom No Limit details. Unfortunately, it also came equipped with a slant-nose front end…”
Official Liquid Liquid x DFA Merch — the world still needs a reprint of Ben Drury’s Mo Wax compilation artwork, but these dad hats are hard.
Art Dogs — a Substack devoted to “introducing the pets—dogs, yes!, but also cats, turtles, marmosets, and more—that were kept by our favorite artists.” Start with Barry Manilow’s beagle named Bagel (!!!) and go from there.
ELUCID, “The World Is Dog” — unrelated title lol. The Backwoodz Studioz crew is so dope and consistent… not every release is 100% my cup of tea but I am always impressed by their art and ethos. This one in particular goes crazy.
John McNaughton ScreenSlate interview — have enjoyed learning about the (surprisingly wavy) origins and catalog of the Wild Things auteur. There’s another good Q&A with him over at Filmmaker Magazine.
Negazione Italian Hardcore — great Bandcamp feature on some old punks I discovered while following a t-shirt rabbit hole.
